Rep. Bishop Remarks during USHR Approp. Cmte. FY27 LHHS Funding Bill Markup

The U.S. House of Representatives' Appropriations Committee marked up its Fiscal Year 2027 Labor, Health & Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies funding bill. The Labor, Health & Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee has funding jurisdiction over the U.S. Dept. of Labor, U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services, U.S. Dept. of Education, and related agencies like the Social Security Administration, National Labor Relations Board, Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, Medicaid & CHIP Payment & Access Commission, and the Institute of Museum & Library Sciences. Congressman Bishop is a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee. During the full committee markup, he expressed concern the the bill will make healthcare less affordable as well as education and job training less accessible. He noted that President Trump, himself, said that he was more focused on unauthorized military strikes in Iran than the economic well-being of the country, and so he urged his colleagues ensure that they make these a priority as Congress considers its investments in American families and businesses for 2027. Congressman Bishop particularly noted that this bill would make it harder for America to educate and train young people in jobs that are crucial to local economies and the nation's defense. He highlighted the Trump Administration's gutting the Job Corps program which has centers in every state and enjoys strong bipartisan support in Congress. He also pointed to the the proposed $1 billion cut to the Centers for Disease Control which not only puts America's public health at risk at a time when there is a growing Ebola epidemic abroad, but also is a major economic driver in Georgia and other states across the country -- decreasing disease surveillance and cancer screenings.
