Rep. Bishop Remarks during USHR Approp. Cmte. FY27 Homeland Security Funding Bill Markup

The U.S. House of Representatives' Appropriations Committee marked up its Fiscal Year 2027 Homeland Security funding bill. The Homeland Security Subcommittee has funding jurisdiction over the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security. Congressman Bishop is a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee. During the full committee markup, he expressed concern the the bill still does not address ongoing concerns regarding guardrails for Homeland Security law enforcement to protect the Constitutional rights of individuals and ensure transparency and accountability for their actions. He also noted that the funding bill guts funding for the Inspector General for the Dept. of Homeland Security. Inspectors General are the units within federal departments and agencies charged with protecting against fraud, waste, and abuse. Within the first few days of the current Trump Administration, the president fired and has not replaced many Inspectors Generals. He once again noted that Congressional Republicans are decreasing funding for national cybersecurity protection and the TSA, putting Americans at greater risk when flying. He also noted that GOP leaders have already cut nutrition and healthcare resources for hardworking Americans in order to circumvent Congress and fund ICE and CBP in a way that circumvents Congressional oversight of its activities.
